Matcha Green Tea has been consumed for centuries for its energising properties and is known for the sustained energy and focus it delivers. More and more people are discovering Matcha and the clean, natural energy it can provide. Matcha can also contribute to increased metabolism and consumption of antioxidants.
Matcha contains naturally occurring caffeine which is joined to the L-theanine amino acid. L- Theanine is what gives Matcha the crisp, vegetative, grassy flavour. When ingested the caffeine and L-theanine bond needs to be broken gradually be absorbed into the blood stream- this is what gives you a sustained energy hit over 3-6 hours. There are no side effects to drinking Matcha, like there is with coffee. Coffee can cause an energy crash and cause caffeine jitters.
A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming Matcha Green Tea can increase thermogenesis (how fast the body burns calories) from a normal 8%-10% of daily energy expenditure, to between 35% and 43% of daily energy expenditure.
Matcha contains high levels of antioxidants known as polyphenols. Polyphenols can help to protect against heart attacks and regulate blood sugar levels and reduce blood pressure. Matcha also has an abundance of catechins, which are among the most potent of antioxidants. A type of catechin called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) is present in Matcha Green Tea, it helps protect health and prevent disease. EGCg is 13 times more concentrated in matcha than other green teas.
The L-theanine found in Matcha increases serotonin and dopamine production in the brain, therefore improving concentration and ensuring a calm, focused mental state. This is the reason Zen Buddhist monks used Matcha during their meditation sessions.
