Matcha Tea, the All-Natural Hangover Cure

OK, even if you’re super 100 percent dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle, there’s still a very high possibility that you’ll have one of those blowout party nights that leave you reaching for a bottle of aspirin or craving some greasy breakfast hangover cure in the morning. But here’s one hangover cure that you might not know about – drinking a cup of matcha tea in the morning.

As if matcha didn’t have enough in its favor already, it’s also a great hangover cure. The combination of three different miracle ingredients – caffeine, antioxidants and chlorophyll – are able to bring you back to your best self sooner than you’d ever expect. Think of these ingredients as your all-natural hangover cure trifecta. The caffeine helps to reduce your headache, the antioxidants help to clean out your body of toxins, and the chlorophyll acts to restore the natural balance in your body.
And – bonus warning here! – green matcha tea also has the ability to protect your liver from the negative side effects of alcohol. That’s because the antioxidants in matcha green tea also go to work on all the free radicals released by alcohol, helping to clean out the toxins in your liver. Based on scientific studies that show how green tea antioxidants protect the liver from free radicals released by toxic chemicals, researchers now suggest that green tea should be used to treat liver disease.

So what’s the best way to embrace matcha tea as the all-natural hangover cure?
One simple solution, of course, is just to drink a bowl of green matcha tea by itself. Or, even better, just blend a spoonful of matcha green tea powder in a half cup of water and drink it like you would medicine. That’s worked for us on many a painful morning after.

However, since hydration is the key to getting rid of a nasty hangover, the best hangover cure consists of mixing matcha with coconut water, and letting the electrolytes do their work. You can even add in a pinch of salt or some lemonade for taste. It may make your cup of matcha taste a bit different than you’re used to, but the benefits of getting all those electrolytes inside of you will pay off in a big way.

Or, here’s another idea – make a matcha green tea hangover smoothie! Add together 1 tsp of green matcha tea powder, a banana, 350 ml of water, 1 tbsp of coconut oil, 60 ml of coconut milk, half an avocado and 1 tsp of ground cinnamon. Then blend it all together, and you’ll have a tasty matcha tea smoothie that will make all your troubles go away!

What matcha tea drinkers have found out is that you can have the best of both worlds: You can stay up all night, and then help to avoid the painful crash when you wake up in the morning. All it takes is a frothy cup of hot green matcha tea or a matcha power smoothie. After just a single cup, you’ll be early for that workout class while your fellow merrymakers are still home in bed, trying to figure out how you’re so ready to go in the morning. Matcha makes all the difference.
